Semester Abroad

The Semester Abroad Program is an initiative — organized by the Alma Mater Ticinensis Foundation and the University of Pavia — aimed at international students who wish to study in Italy.
The program offers a unique opportunity to deepen knowledge of the Italian language and culture and explore its European connections. It is divided into two components:
- Italian Studies courses - they provide a solid theoretical foundation, enriched by field experiences, and cover Italian culture and history in a variety of areas, including architecture, design, music, food, and wine. Courses are taught in English by professors from the University of Pavia. Each student is required to take a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 courses, depending on their academic plan. Students may earn between 12 and 18 credits (3 credits per course), which will be recognized by their home institution.
- Italian language courses - available at all levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced intermediate, advanced). Each 90-hour course grants 6 academic credits. Language proficiency will be assessed through a placement test.
To give students a direct experience of Italian culture and lifestyle, the program also includes field trips led by experts, offering insight into the historical, cultural, economic, and culinary heritage of the Lombardy region.
The program is held during the Fall semester (September–December) and Spring semester (February–May).
Students will reside in Palazzo Vistarino, an 18th-century residence in the heart of Pavia, offering single and double rooms, as well as three conference rooms and three meeting and training rooms.
Application deadlines:
- Fall Semester: June 3
- Spring Semester: October 15
