Visa

If you are a European Union national (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), no Visa formalities are needed to enter Italy.

If you are a Non-European Union national, you may be required to apply for a Visa, depending on your category and the length of your stay.

Remember to always visit the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation’s webpage to find out whether you need a Visa to enter Italy, and to identify the competent Italian embassy or consulate in your country of residence, that you must contact in order to obtain a detailed list of the necessary documentation for the Visa application.

Please note that the process can be lengthy and may take up to 2-3 months.

SELF-EMPLOYMENT VISA FOR PROFESSORS

The University will provide professors with the following 4 documents, which are part of the required documentation for obtaining a Self-employment Visa from the embassy/consulate:

  • Certification issued by the competent “Direzione Provinciale del Lavoro–Servizio Politiche del Lavoro” stating that the contract does not constitute subordinate employment;
  • Signed contract;
  • Proof of accommodation: availability of suitable lodging to be proven by one of the following means: a) rental agreement, lease or ownership deed; b) letter of hospitality (original) from an Italian or foreign citizen legally residing in Italy, stating that she/he is providing suitable accommodation that meets the minimum requirements established by regional public housing regulations;
  • “Nulla Osta” (Entry Clearance) issued by the competent Italian Questura (main Police Station in the city where the applicant will reside) within the previous 90 days. 

RESEARCH VISA FOR SCHOLARS

The University will provide scholars with the following document, which is part of the required documentation for obtaining a Research Visa from the embassy/consulate:

  • “Nulla Osta” (Entry Clearance) issued by the competent Italian Questura (main Police Station in the city where the applicant will reside) within the previous 90 days. 

STUDY VISA FOR CICOPS SCHOLARS AND PhD STUDENTS

The University will provide applicants with the following document, which is part of the required documentation for obtaining a Study Visa from the embassy/consulate:

  • “Invitation letter”, to be obtained through different procedures depending on the applicant's category (CICOPS Scholar or Visiting PhD Student). Please refer to the "Visiting Scholars" section or the “Visiting PhD students” section and select your respective category for instructions on obtaining the invitation letter.

Study Visa requests must be started on the Ministry of University and Research’s platform “Universitaly” and then completed by making an appointment at the competent embassy/consulate. 

In order to apply on the platform, applicants can refer to these guidelines (“Visa applicants” section).

Residence Permit

SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND RESEARCH VISA
If you enter Italy with a Self-employment or Research Visa, you must apply for a residence permit within 8 days of your arrival.

STUDY VISA
If you enter Italy with a Study Visa:

  • If you stay for less than 150 days, you will not need to apply for a residence permit.
  • If you stay for more than 150 days, you must apply for a residence permit within 8 days of your arrival.

 

RESIDENCE PERMIT APPLICATION

To apply for a residence permit, depending on your type of Visa you will have to refer to different institutions:

  • Self-employment or Study Visa: please contact the “Residence Permit helpdesk” at Questura and then make an appointment here. They will provide you with the application envelope (“Residence Permit kit”) and will assist you in filling out the application.
  • Research Visa: please send an email to Prefettura ([email protected]) requesting an appointment. You will receive a reply with the appointment details and the list of the required documents. They will provide you with the application envelope (“Residence Permit kit”) and will assist you in filling out the application.

Once the Residence Permit application is filled out, the procedure becomes the same for all types of Visas. In particular:

  • You must hand the “Residence Permit kit” to the Post Office in order to send it to the Immigration Authorities. The costs are the following: mailing 30; bulletin €70,46; commission: €2; duty stamp: €16 (+ €16 for Research residence permit only).
  • After sending the “Residence Permit kit” you will be given a receipt of your application (“ricevuta” in  Italian). On the receipt you will find the date of your fingerprints appointment at Questura.

  • When your Residence Permit is ready for collection at Questura, you will receive an SMS notification on the phone number you provided.

Please note that the status of your Residence Permit can always be checked on Portale Immigrazione using the username and password found on the Post Office receipt.

Extend your stay at UNIPV 

If you would like to extend your stay beyond the validity of your Residence Permit, you should contact the Visiting Staff office at least 2 months before its expiration date.
